EGSB team members Dr. Natalia Vinas and Mr. Mitch Wilbanks have been expanding ERDC’s capabilities by overseeing the development of a Zebrafish wet-lab facility over the past few years. The space includes an isolation chamber, two husbandry chambers, several embryo incubators, and molecular biology, cell culture, and behavior labs. The EGSB team will be running exposures to Army-relevant toxins coupled with in silico efforts to develop mathematical models of chemical exposure. Our long-term goal will be to tackle in vitro to in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE), understanding how we can interpret the effects of chemicals on cells in isolation to predict the effects on an organism. This would reduce the need to test chemicals on animal models, allowing the estimation of toxicity in a more humane fashion.
